The Importance of Regular Oil Changes in ATVs: What You Need to Know

A Step by Step

Gather Your Supplies
The first step in changing your ATV’s oil is to gather all of the supplies that you’ll need. This includes the new engine oil, an oil filter, a funnel, and a torque wrench or socket set. You’ll also need some rags for cleaning up any spills and a container for collecting the old oil. Make sure all of your supplies are on hand before you begin the process.

Drain The Old Oil
Once you have all of the supplies ready, it’s time to drain the old oil from your ATV. Start by warming up your engine for a few minutes so that the old oil flows more easily out of the crankcase. When it’s warm enough, locate the drain bolt on your ATV and use a socket wrench to loosen and remove it. Once removed, place a container underneath the crankcase and allow all of the old oil to drain into it. Make sure you dispose of this used motor oil properly when finished!

Replace The Oil Filter And Refill With New Oil
Next up is replacing your ATV’s oil filter with a new one. Remove the old filter and install a new one in its place—it should only take about two turns clockwise to tighten it securely. Once that’s done, pour in new engine oil using a funnel until it reaches its recommended level (this information can be found in your owner’s manual). Don’t forget to snugly replace the drain bolt after refilling with fresh engine oil!
