What Type of Gas Does a Side by Side ATV Take?

If you own or are looking to buy a side by side ATV, then one of the most important things you need to know is what type of gas it takes. Depending on the specific model, there may be different requirements for fuel type and octane rating. Let’s take a look at the different types of fuel and which ones will work best for your vehicle.

Octane Rating & Fuel Type

The octane rating of your side by side ATV’s fuel should match that specified in the owner’s manual. The octane rating is an indication of how resistant the fuel is to pre-ignition in high compression engines. For example, if your owner’s manual suggests 87 octane gasoline, it means that this type of gasoline has been tested and found to be suitable for use in your engine. Additionally, it is important to check the label on the gas can or pump before filling up, as some pumps may contain higher octanes than labeled (such as 87/88).

Most ATVs require regular unleaded gasoline with an octane rating between 87 and 90. Some vehicles may require premium fuel with an octane rating above 91, but this will depend on its specific engine type. It’s important to note that using a higher octane does not increase power; rather, it helps prevent pre-ignition or “knocking” due to high compression levels in certain engine designs. Using a lower grade than required can damage your engine from excessive detonation or pre-ignition.

There are also non-petroleum based fuels such as methanol that can be used in certain types of ATVs depending on their design and manufacturer specifications. Generally speaking, these fuels have higher octane ratings than petroleum-based fuels which makes them more suitable for higher performance engines with increased compression levels. However, not all manufacturers approve the use of non-petroleum based fuels so always refer to your owner’s manual before making any changes.

Choosing the right type of gas for your side by side ATV is essential if you want it to perform optimally and last longer without any issues caused by improper fueling habits. Make sure you read through your vehicle’s owner’s manual thoroughly so you know exactly what kind of gas your vehicle needs—and don’t forget to always double check labels when filling up! Doing so will help keep your vehicle running smoothly for many years down the road! Happy trails!
